Forethought Medicare Supplements: What Do They Cover?

Forethought Medicare Supplement plans are some of the most common Medicare supplement plans nationwide. They are relatively new to the Medicare Supplement marketplace, but they offer very competitive rates from a highly-rated company. Additionally, because Medicare Supplements are standardized, all companies are required to offer the same coverage layouts. This means that a Plan F with one company is the exact same as a Plan F sold through a different company like Forethought. When it comes down to it, the only differentiating factors are price and company reputation, both of which Forethought does well in.

ALL Medicare Supplement plans cover what Medicare calls “basic benefits”. These basic benefits include the 20% that Medicare doesn’t pay at the doctor and hospital. Additionally, nearly all of the plans that are offered by Forethought also cover the Medicare deductibles (which are: Part A Deductible = $1,132/benefit period for 2011; Part B Deductible = $162/year for 2011). In addition to these primary benefits, there are additional benefits that are offered under many of Forethought’s plans. Some of these additional benefits that are offered in some cases include: Skilled Nursing Facility coinsurance, hospice coinsurance, Part B excess charges and foreign travel emergencies. To get a full rundown of which plans offer which benefits, take a look at the Medigap coverage chart.

How Do Forethought Medigap Plans Work?

Forethought Medigap plans, because they are Federally-standardized, operate like any other Medicare Supplement plan sold through any other company. The summary of this is that you can go to any doctor or hospital – claims are automatically handled through the Medicare system. This means that there are no networks, which makes it extremely easy to use their plans.

One important consideration when signing up for any Medicare Supplement plan is when your open enrollment period is. It is important to sign up for a Medicare supplement plan during your open enrollment period. Or if you are already over 65 and already have Medicare Part B, you should try to sign up during a “guaranteed issue” period if you have one. During these times, you cannot be made to answer health questions or pay more for coverage of pre-existing conditions. Your Medicare supplement open enrollment period starts the first day of the month that you are both over 65 and on Medicare Part B and lasts for 6 months. Most companies allow you to sign up (under open enrollment provisions) up to 6 months prior to your Medicare start date. As far as “guaranteed issue”, these period usually occur when you are leaving employer-type coverage or losing some type of coverage due to moving to a new state (there are other circumstances that are “guaranteed issue” too but these two are the most common).

Why Is Forethought a Good Option for Your Medicare Supplement Insurance?

Forethought is a good option for Medicare Supplement insurance, when they are the price leader for your age and zip code. This is the case currently in many areas of the country. Because plans are standardized and because Forethought is an ‘A’ rated company, if rates are lower, this is a great option for you. If you already have Medicare Supplement insurance, you should be comparing your rates, at a minimum, every two years, to insure that you always have the most competitively-priced plan available.

How Do You Get More Information or Enroll in a Forethought Medicare Supplement Plan?

To enroll in a Forethought plan, you can either sign up directly through the company or through an independent agent. If possible, we always recommend using an independent agent or agency, no matter which agent/agency it is. The reasons for this are many, but here are a few. First of all, it doesn’t cost you any more, and you get the unbiased service and support from an agent who is working on your behalf. If you sign up directly through an insurance company, you typically don’t have a dedicated person to call if you ever have any problems or question – you just have an 800 number to a call room. On the contrary, with an independent agent, their loyalty is to you to ensure that your questions are answered and any problems are taken care of.
